Who is to blame for those cute cards that you always get in the mail for a numerous amount of occasions? Well, the person who created the concept of the greeting card came about two hundred years ago when a man by the name of Sir Henry Cole when he created the mass greeting card that would be sent as a Christmas card. The first Christmas card was created by the help of John Calcott Horsely in the 1800’s. Thus came the first greeting card. This was the first sent card, but in all actuality the concept of the card started probably back in the age of the Egyptians.
Sir Henry Cole laid the foundation of sending them to everyone at Christmas time when he contacted his friend to help him with this greeting card idea as he asked Mr. Horsely to hand print and then engrave a thousand Christmas cards for him. This as when Sir Henry Cole had explained that he was late in sending off his Christmas letter. Over time though. The Christmas card and the greeting card became more popular as colored printing wasn’t so expensive and the cost of delivery was just a penny.
The first Christmas card was a cute Christmas card indeed. It had a young boy on the front of it and then the boy was wearing a red scarf on the greeting card that read Merry Christmas. The leftover cards were then sold on Old Bond Street for a nice sum for a greeting card.
Since then, Americans then were importing their Christmas card collection from Germany. With a fifty dollar loan and a whole new era, a gentleman in America started his own greeting card business. He began selling the Christmas card collection that he had to local drug stores for a penny and soon his greeting card business took off before Jacob Sapirstein passed away. When Mr. Sapirstein passed away, his wife and son took over the greeting card business.
Before long, the Christmas card wasn’t the only greeting card that was on the market. By the 1980s there was a greeting card for just about every occasion there was out there. More and more people were demanding the Christmas card boxed sets. They would send out the greeting card collection in bulk and that is how the greeting card industry came into full swing. Many cultures came to America in that amount of time. With that, the greeting card industry has decided that they would market those who have come from the different cultures and who speak different languages.
So, what began with just a Christmas card, has evolved into so much more. It has been a way for men to show how they really feel. For friends, it has sometimes become the only words they have times for. People find how important they really are on those special occasions because they count the cards that many people hand picked. These cards have become the growing knowledge of what people are saying. So, there you have it. This is the beginning of the cute gestures that many have grown to love. Since then, over one hundred and million cards are sent each year and that is world wide.
